3 Problems with Airsoft Gun Hop-Up/Accuracy and How to Fix Them

Even most cheap airsoft guns come with adjustable hop-up systems that let you tinker around and make adjustments on the fly so you can bring accuracy back to where you need it to be.

With that said, sometimes it’s not quite straightforward what to change or what adjustment to make to fix the issue.

Start with this guide and remember these problems so you can fix them in the field.

Hop-Up Adjustments Aren’t Working

Are you adjusting your hop-up system, only to be flustered when you shoot the AEG and see no change in the trajectory of the shot?

There could be a few problems here.

One of the main reasons the hop-up won’t adjust is if the hop nub has become dislocated from its position. To fix this you need to open the hop-up unit; check the nub, and slide it back into its slot if it has moved.

This is also a good time to check to see if the hop nub has been damaged. It’s not likely but an excessively worn hop nub won’t impart any spin to the BB. If the hop-up nub is in place, check for damage and replace if necessary.

It’s also possible that you’re playing with a hop nub that’s way too hard for the application. Remember, softer hop nubs are better for AEGs with slower FPS ratings. If you’re playing with a super-blazing-fast AEG, a soft nub just might not cut it. Replace it with a harder nub and see if that makes a difference in performance.

BB Spins Off to the Left or Right

If your airsoft ammo is yawing off to the right or left after firing, there could be a few causes of this irritating phenomenon.

One is that the bucking isn’t lined up properly or isn’t properly set with the alignment ridge. Take apart the hop-up unit, investigate, and correct the issue.

If there is too much play between the arm of the hop-up unit and the hop-up unit itself, the BBs might spin off to the left or right. Shimming the hop-up arm with brass or aluminum sheet may fix this issue.

It could also be that your barrel is dirty. When you get off the field, clear and disassemble the airsoft gun, clean the barrel, and apply a dry lubricant like PTFE. Plink a bit and see if that solves the issue.

Ammo that veers off course might also be too light for the airsoft gun. Remember, just because the thing was chrono’d with .20g BBs doesn’t mean it should be shooting them. Heavier airsoft ammo like .25g and .32g BBs will perform better with faster, more powerful AEGs.

BB Doesn’t Shoot Far Enough

Another issue could be caused by the airsoft ammo itself.

If your shots just aren’t getting far enough no matter how much you hop them, you might be playing with airsoft ammo that’s too heavy.

Take a step back in weight and see if that ammo performs better in your airsoft gun.
