In the UK, a law has been passed which states that there are to be no new diesel or petrol cars or vans to be legally sold within the UK after 2030. Unfortunately, motorhomes fall into the category of a van, which means if you own a motorhome, you may be panicking.
This is not to say that motorhomes will suddenly become illegal. It simply means that no new motorhomes or cars will be available which run on diesel or petrol, so there may still be a lot of movement in the second-hand selling of these vehicles.
With that in mind, here are some factors that you need to know about the future of motorhomes.
Electric and Hybrid
The emphasis of this law is on diesel and petrol as part of reducing CO2 emissions. Diesel and petrol motorhomes are generally being phased into electric or hybrid options. This means, in short, that your motorhome will no longer run on diesel or petrol and will likely operate on a battery, which will require charging or potentially a hybrid of the 2 options.
There Is Still Time
Of course, if you have only just got your driver’s license and are saving to buy a large motorhome in the future, you may be concerned that you are running out of time. As mentioned earlier, there will still likely be a lot of movement in the second-hand market of motorhomes after 2030, and you still have eight years to purchase your brand-new vehicle. So, try not to panic!
Batteries Need Some Work
One of the key drawbacks of many electric vehicles is their range related to batteries. The electricity that is being used in an electric-based motorhome is likely to have a range of just over 100 miles, but this is at the moment and in 2030, there may be a wider range of batteries available to power motorhomes. Hopefully, these batteries will be able to carry you and your family further than 100 miles without needing to be charged.
Hydrogen May Lead The Way
Hydrogen is a fast developing heavily backed technology, and the best part is that it is suitable for heavier vehicles such as motorhomes and even trains. There are already hydrogen-powered cars available today, so it may be a simple transition to fusing this technology into the motorhomes which come out after 2030. This also helps with the issue of recharging, which can be a long process for an electric vehicle, whereas refueling with hydrogen will only take the same amount of time as it does to fill up a gas tank with diesel or petrol.
Value Of Motorhomes
It is hard to speculate what will happen to the value of motorhomes in the future, as the government in the UK is aiming to put a taxation on these vehicles to once again reduce CO2 emissions. Some people state that motorhomes may drop in value because of these taxes and the issues that can come from having a higher-taxed vehicle. Others say that they may increase in value due to something of a retro-based trend, but only time will tell.
